Training your Troublemaker: Early Canine Behavior

By: Brett Jorrey, CVA

Pet behavior is such an interesting field of study due to the fact that we know so much, yet we still understand so little. As more and more pets make their way into our hearts and our households, the importance of good behavior as well as knowing and understanding our pet’s behavior signals is ever more increasing. Understanding these signals not only allows for us to enrich their lives, but to also provide a level of comfort and safety. Good pet behavior begins with puppies, their most crucial range for socialization being from 8 weeks old to about 17 weeks of age. In that time frame, dogs will learn bite inhibition, how to play with other dogs and what they should and should not be afraid of. You want to do this in a safe, fun, and controlled environment, such as a puppy preschool class, in order to avoid risks of infections and future misbehavior. This also allows for new pet owners to develop knowledge and leadership to help guide their puppy to good behavior habits as they grow. In addition to training classes, I always emphasize the importance of reinforcing good behaviors in your pets. This is done by giving them small treats and lots of praise when they are behaving correctly. By incorporating good habits into your pets daily routine, you will find that over time you will recognize behavior signals, and you will be able to adjust accordingly to various situations that you may find yourself in with your canine companion.
