Meowy Christmas and Yappy Holidays

By Chassidy Gibson

With the Christmas season well underway, it is important to remember how dangerous it can be for our mischievous pets.  This year, let us take preventative measures in order to ensure that our pets remain healthy and happy this holiday season.
Bones, which are appealing to our canine companions, can also get lodged in the throat, stomach, and intestinal tracts, making surgery necessary.  Be aware that raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, macadamia nuts, and gum are a few common foods that can potentially make our pets very sick.   However, food is not the only hazard for pets during the holiday season.   Plants such as holly, mistletoe, and poinsettias are aesthetically pleasing and festive, but they can be poisonous.  Appealing decorations, such as tinsel and ribbon, can be dangerous when ingested, so try to keep your curious kitty away from them.    Make sure to secure trees in case it turns into a feline scratching post or tipped over by an overzealous canine.   Extension cords can also easily be turned into chew toys if within reach.   A less obvious hazard is the stress from company.  Be sure pets have a quiet place to go to in order to get away from the commotion of holiday festivities.
In order to ensure the safety of your pet, think about all the tempting things that are often put out during this time of year and how they could potentially harm your four-legged family member. If we do that, we can make this holiday season happy and safe for everyone.
