Pet Food Misconceptions

By: Amber Thakur RVT

As you shop for pet food, the wide range of foods available often astounds you. You notice some brands are labeled corn free, soy free or no preservatives.  What does this all mean? How does food affect your dog's health?

Corn has been labeled as filler ingredient and a major cause of allergies. However, this is NOT true. Corn is easily digested by animals. Corn has been shown to cause fewer allergies than other food sources such as beef, dairy products, wheat, chicken, egg, lamb or soy. According to recent studies in various species, antioxidants in food such as corn may potentially reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, arthritis and slow down the aging process. It is also rich in fatty acids for healthy skin and coat. Corn is a well rounded nutritional ingredient making it an ideal choice for pet food.

Soy often gets a bad rap in pet food. Soy is one of the world’s oldest and widely used protein sources. It has healthy characteristics such as a great source of fiber, no cholesterol, and contains key antioxidants. It is an ingredient that is in constant supply which can help keep the cost of food reasonable.

Most pet owners buy food once a month. But if pet food contained no preservatives this would not be possible.  Preservatives help stabilize fats and fat soluble vitamins against oxidation which leads to rancidity and loss of nutritional value. Preservatives can be natural or synthetic.  One of the most common preservatives in pet food is a synthetic antioxidant, ethoxyquin. It has been approved by the FDA for more than 45 years. When used at recommended levels it ensures dogs and cats are eating the safest, freshest food possible.

So what should you look for in a pet food? Your pet’s nutritional needs are based on age, activity level, temperament, environment and physical makeup. Look for a food that fits your pet and the environment rather than breed. Choose a premium brand food that is formulated for the current stage of your pets’ life.
