HAVE YOU SEEN FIDO LIMPING?
Have you seen Fido limping?
Arthritis is a painful condition that can affect our beloved canine
companions. In fact, arthritis is common and is one of the main causes of
chronic pain in canines. Arthritis can be a very debilitating disease, greatly
detracting from a dog's quality of life and ability to enjoy even the most
basic of daily activities.
Some of the
common symptoms of arthritis are limping, favoring one or more limbs,
difficulty rising from a resting position, withdrawing from the family and
slowing down on walks. Often, there is a
generalized stiffness, worse in the morning and gradually improving throughout
the day. Their interest in jumping, fetching, or catching ball may lessen. Some
dogs with this disease don't like to be touched or petted, and may yelp or show
other signs of pain when touched. Weight gain may also occur which can worsen
symptoms. It is important to keep weight
in the healthy range. Arthritis often
has a very slow onset that makes it more difficult for owners to notice.
If Fido is
exhibiting these symptoms it is important to consult your veterinarian. They will conduct a complete physical
examination asking questions about the lifestyle of your pet as well as the
behavior, symptoms and changes you are seeing at home. During the physical
exam, the doctor will palpate the dog's joints and may want to take x-rays or
blood work to aid in the diagnosis.
There
are several medications available to aid in controlling the pain and swelling
of arthritis. One of the most effective
is the class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs available through your
veterinarian. As a supplement,
glucosamine can be helpful and some of the food companies have made
prescription foods available that have supplements already added.
The
good news is that, with treatment, many of our four legged family members can
have a significant improvement in their quality of life and once again enjoy
more activities in their life.
