Daycare
at Whiskers and Paws Pet Resort Prior to attending daycare . . . The application form is quite extensive and gives us an idea of the temperament of the applicant. The first step is to go over the application form and discuss the questions and answers with the owner. At the screening appointment, we are looking at their attitude and response to human handling. This includes all four paws being picked up, petting all over the dogs body, a big restraint hug, teeth and ear check, and to see how comfortable the dog is with this kind of touch, both physically and emotionally. We also check their responses when playing with people and watch for signs of fearfulness or aggression with new people and new situations. The next step involves introducing them to another dog through the fence. We watch for physical signs of acceptance, playfulness, excitement as well as fearfulness or aggression (tail tucked, lowering head, cowering, yawning or other body language that indicates they are uncomfortable). We will continue to introduce dogs one at a time.
This
test may be terminated at any time during this process, if necessary .
New dog: First Day All new dogs are integrated into the pack by the daycare manager or trained staff. New dogs must be the first dog in the morning so it greets the established dogs one at a time as they come into daycare. The new dog will meet one dog at a time in separated area big enough to create space for the dogs to interact with out inhibiting all body language. The number of dogs will increase over the next hour until the dog meets every dog. The most important objective of this first encounter is to assess temperament and basic skill level of the new dog meeting and greeting other dogs. The new dog is also one of the first dogs to leave in the late afternoon so there is not stress of watching the other dogs leaving wondering when its parents will come, since the dog has no idea what it means to be in this new situation. We want the stress level during the first session, which is the most important, to be managed as much as possible. All new dogs are to be picked up by 3pm on their first day of daycare. Employees practice recalls with treats and praise the new dog responding to their name. If new dog is a small dog, then attention is given to making sure that all dogs respect the smaller dogs space and size. Midday End of Day Two day a month, minimum commitment: Your dog can be dropped off at the daycare center between 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. and picked up between 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. (if you need an earlier drop-off or later pick up, please ask about options). RESERVATIONSRequired if your dog comes in once a week, it is suggested to keep to the same day as much as possible. That way your dog is familiar with his dog buddies.
