With the summer months approaching rapidly, many of us are starting to kick our travel plans into gear. Oftentimes, many people will incorporate their pets into these plans. However, for a large portion of pet owners, traveling with a pet can be a subject of great hesitation and concern, due to motion sickness when riding in the car. A fairly large population of our companion dogs (1 out of every 6 dogs according to studies by Pfizer) is commonly affected by this discouraging and distasteful condition. Many families will choose to leave behind their furry friends for this summer’s vacation. Common signs and symptoms of motion sickness can include hyper salivation due to nausea and vomiting. Motion sickness in dogs commonly goes unreported for the simple reason that it rarely comes up in conversation with their veterinarians and therefore is commonly left untreated. Many people feel that there is little that can be done to alleviate the issues. However, there are now treatments and / or medications available that can be implemented by your pet’s veterinarian, which can help soothe your traveling woes. If you feel that your traveling dog friend is dealing with motion sickness, I personally recommend that you contact your veterinarian well in advance of your vacation in order to be prepared. Then when the time comes for your family to hit the road, Maxie dog can tag along for the fun!
