As most of us know, allergies are rampant in Texas right now. It seems that everywhere we go, allergens are infiltrating our lives. For a large percentage of the human population, molds, spores, fungi, pollens, dust and pet dander (to name a few) are constant sources of misery in our lives. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe your pets are suffering too? While we present with symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing and runny or stuffy nose, our pets typically present with very itchy, irritated skin. Dogs with allergies will typically develop them before three years of age. They will often lick or chew at their paws and legs, rub their faces, and scratch at their ears. Cats might over groom themselves to the point of hair loss and can also display itchy ears and irritated areas on their chin and face. Itchy skin, rashes and, at times, secondary infections, make it very unpleasant for you and your pet.
Pets are affected by a lot of the same allergens that affect us, so be careful when leaving your pet outdoors to sun-bathe in the grass or dirt. As a pet owner of a dog with seasonal allergies, I have gotten creative over the years in trying to offer some non-prescription relief. For outdoor allergens, I try to wipe his feet with sensitive skin baby wipes prior to coming in from outdoors. Molds, seeds, spores and fungi will attach themselves to the paws and provide a constant source of irritation. Wiping the feet will remove a majority of these allergens and possibly provide some relief. Likewise, soaking their feet in an Epsom salt bath can also be effective in providing some relief. The Epsom salt soothes and provides a slight numbing effect for sore, itchy feet. Cool water, oatmeal based pet shampoos are also a good way of offering temporary relief. Of course, there are many prescription drugs available that work wonders on allergies, but in the interim, these simple treatments can provide at least temporary relief until you can get your loved one to the vet.
Allergy testing provides your pet with an individualized vaccine against their most irritating allergens. Close to 80% of pets tested benefit from the injections that they receive. They are easily administered monthly at home. Flea bites (due to the flea saliva) are another highly common allergen that can cause more itchy discomfort than the flea itself. So, using a prescription flea control every month can repel those nasty parasites and keep flea allergies at bay.
